Where people see a morphine addicted nasty old lady, Atticus sees a lady who had a difficult life trying to die with a shred of dignity. He says that because Mrs. Dubose called him that and he agreed with it because he loves everyone and thinks nobody should be treated like African Americans are treated. He’s trying to teach scout that it doesn’t matter what race you are as long as you treat everybody equally.
